Click here for yet another scandal about MP’s expenses – this time its about Derby South incumbent, Margaret Beckett.
The public are sick and tired of this. No one thinks Mrs Beckett is dishonest but MPs are workers like everyone else with legitimate expenses like everyone else. Why can’t they just be as transparent as the rest of us have to be?
As someone looking to become an MP, I am deeply embarrassed by all of this. If elected, I will publish my expense accounts quarterly on this website.
We must make politics better value for the taxpayer and we must make it more transparent. Sadly, with a Prime Minister that avoids the views of the people whenever he can, and who spends our money whenever he can, we’re unlikely to see transparency and value for money without a change of government.
Am I surprised? It seems New Labour and hypocrisy go hand in hand. These people have no shame, having driven the Country to the brink of ruin they are lining their pockets to the tune of hundreds of thousands of pounds, whilst the rest of us will have to watch every penny for years to come. And how many times throughout history have we heard the excuse “We’ve done nothing wrong.”
