Some of you may have seen the following article in Quentin Letts’ blog on the Daily Mail website last month. Incredibly kind of him but, now that Mrs Beckett is stuck having to fight an election, I’m loving being here in Derby and getting on with the job of bringing a new kind of politics to the city.
- Hardly any Tories want oddball Conservative MP John Bercow (Buckingham) to become Speaker on Monday.
But Jack Perschke might be forgiven for doing so, Mr Perschke is Tory candidate in Derby South and has a good chance of beating the sitting MP, Margaret Beckett.
But Beckett is Bercow’s rival on Monday. If she becomes Speaker, the form is that she be given a clear run in Derby South at the General Election.
Former infantry officer Perschke is taking it like a brick. He acknowledges that in politics, as in the Army, the individual is less important than the institution.
‘I would be happy to follow the conventions of our democracy and stand aside,’ he says. If he is prevented from fighting Derby South, this young man deserves a chance in a solid Tory seat elswhere.
I don’t know if he’s a Freemason, but how about Buckingham?
